Lighting Journal #64 – Big Fish: Broadway
In terms of lighting design and enforcing the fantasy versus reality, I think this Broadway show of Big Fish is a way better interpretation than Tim Burton’s film.
Because both the real world and the fantasy world exists on stage at the same time, you can actually tell the big difference in how they chose to light portions of the stage. And from the images above and the article, they chose to surround the natural lighting for the real world with elements from magical realism. They also employed projectors to help bring out the fantasy world more, which is evident in the second picture. And I think that came through very well. So well that I wish I could have seen it.
